wildearth > This hyena had hidden in the grass after a tussle with another hyena. Hidden there in a moment of respite, with tattered ears, she exemplifies my image of indomitable beauty in a harsh world.
wildearth > Just south of Skukuza in Kruger National Park, I saw a family of Hyenas coming toward me along the road, a male, a female and four cubs. I stopped the vehicle and waited to see if they'd approach. They did, and they hung around for about 15 minutes before moving off into the bush.
wildearth > This male hyena cub shows the intensity of the predator he will become.
wildearth > This is my favorite of the hyena cubs. While the others stayed off to the side, this one came up, looked me in the eye, and then started chewing on my tires.
wildearth > The two less adventurous cubs stayed behind seemingly amazed that their brother would venture so close to my vehicle.
wildearth > The most common game animal in South Africa's Kruger The most common game animal in southern Africa would have to be the impala. Everywhere you go, they're browsing around the waterholes and roadsides. Still, if you're going to have this many of some animal, you could do a lot worse than the beautiful impala.
wildearth > This buck was grazing with the rest of his herd just before sunset one day in Kruger National Park. Notice the different colored vegetation in some of these photos. The green ones were taken in the wet season and the brown ones in the dry season.
wildearth > When you're face-to-face, you really understand that lions are the top predator in Africa. There's something about looking into those deep yellow eyes that makes you momentarily forget you're a member of the most dangerous species ever to walk this planet.
wildearth > Looking into a lion's eyes makes you feel insignificant. Looking into her mouth makes you feel like prey.
