This lace monitor lizard was foraging for food in our camp in Queensland. When you're used to North American lizards, it's quite a treat to see a lizard as big as a dog stroll by.

This smaller lace monitor had taken a rest in the crook of a tree when I saw him. His colors are much brighter than those of the larger and older monitors I saw.

It would be rare indeed to see a tuatara in the wild as they are now mostly found on New Zealand's offshore islands. I took this photo in the Wellington zoo.

This female yellow-eyed penguin had just come ashore at the end of the day and fed her chicks. Afterward, she found the last bit of sun and basked in the remaining warmth.
