wildearth > One foggy morning, along the Sabi River in Kruger National Park, I spotted this lone baboon sitting like a sentinel looking over the river.
wildearth > These two zebra were both startled by a sound in the bush at the same time setting up this shot. It's my favorite of the zebra shots.
wildearth > There are three main species of zebra. Those found in Kruger National Park are a sub-species of the plains zebra know as the Burchell's zebra. I saw this one just as the sun was rising one morning. They are common, so you don't always stop, but I just liked the way the light was hitting him.
wildearth > Zebra are related to horses and asses, and like those, they tend to graze more or less constantly. Some suggest this helps them to be prepared to run from predators on short notice.
wildearth > The wildebeest (or gnu) is very common and one of the favorite prey of lions. The entire herd to which these belong stood staring so intently one early dawn that I was sure something was lurking about. Eventually, one wildebeest called out and they all moved on into the bush.
wildearth > This young waterbuck doe was quite curious about my vehicle. I spent a long time that morning, just sitting and watching her herd.
wildearth > Waterbuck are a common species in southern Africa, but are still one of my favorites. I love the circle on the rump that looks like a target.
wildearth > Warthogs are great, but frustrating to photograph. They're either habituated to people, in which case they never look interesting, or they're not, in which case you only get to shoot thier rear ends as they trot off with their tails in the air. Apparently, this guy felt secure enough not to run when I spied him through the bushes.
wildearth > These small antelope are very shy. While you see them from time to time, they usually disappear very quickly. I was pleased, then, that this one stood and posed for me for a few seconds before bolting for the bush.
